Periodically Queer

Periodically Queer is One Institute’s first podcast. With two seasons, this podcast dives into the history of LGBTQ+ community building through print media from the 1950s to the 2000s.

As a podcast’s lead producer, Umi Hsu oversaw the project from ideation and fundraising, through building the production team, to script writing and story editing, sound design, branding, coaching hosts and voice actors, and content design.

Season Two was profiled in LA Times. Season One was featured in The Advocate and the storytelling strategy is discussed on the People Nerds podcast.

Season Two trailer

Season Two features two documentary episodes. Episode 1 highlights the activist publication Vanguard Magazine, and the radical legacy of the queer and trans unhoused youth activists from San Francisco’s Tenderloin District who were involved in its creation in the 1960s.

Episode 2 spotlights community-building power of One Institute’s very own ONE Magazine, the first publicly distributed gay and lesbian magazine in the country and a catalyst in the movement for LGBTQ+ free speech rights.
